No matter how much better your aftermarket miter saw dust collection works compared to the factory setup, it does nothing to collect the debris that gets forced below the saw's table.

So, where does all that debris go?

Some of it falls to the floor and under the saw. But a surprising majority of it gets ejected BEHIND the collector via the throat plate. This is especially true when cutting wide material, since the collector moves with the saw blade, further away from the back of the saw where the dust is ejected. In fact, depending on the size of the material you're cutting, so much dust escapes through the rear of the throat plate that it may seem like your aftermarket dust collection isn't working that great to begin with.

Enter the Dust Collection Throat Plate for the DeWALT DWS779 and DWS780 sliding miter saws.

This replacement throat plate has a built-in shroud that surrounds the blade under the table, guiding all the debris to the rear of the saw. And once there, a specially designed vacuum port sucks it all away via a clear vinyl tube connected to your vacuum or extractor.

It is meant to be used in tandem with aftermarket dust collection units that use a 1-5/8" outside diameter hose cuff. And to make it even better, it also uses replaceable, sticky-back, PVC tape for a zero clearance insert to provide you with safe, clean cuts.

What's included?

  • Throat Plate/Shroud. This will come as two pieces, a front section and a rear section. It replaces the factory throat plate and installs reusing the factory screws.
  • Throat Plate Vacuum port. This installs on the rear section of the throat plate with four small screws (included) and a 2mm hex (Allen) wrench (not included).
  • Clear Vinyl Hose. This is what carries the dust away. It connects the throat plate vacuum port to the vacuum adapter.
  • Vacuum Adapter. This is what allows everything to work together. On the vacuum side you can hook up to almost any extruder, shop vacuum or even a dust collector. It will accept 2-1/2" dust collection hose, 2-1/2" shop vacuum hose, 1-7/8 shop vacuum hose or 36mm Festool antistatic hose. On the tool side there are two ports. One port is to hook up the 1-5/8" hose cuff from your aftermarket behind-the-blade unit. The other port is sized to fit the supplied 1/2" outside diameter vinyl hose OR can be used with 5/8" inside diameter hose (not included or available from us). All fittings are tapered to provide a secure connection to a wide variety of brands of hoses, both new and old.
  • Zero Clearance Tape. This is what will give you the benefits of a zero clearance insert. It is sticky-backed and removable/replaceable, and the throat plate is recessed so that the zero-clearance tape will sit flush to the surface.
  • Rail Stops. In the event that the vinyl hose interferes with your aftermarket dust collection, the two 45mm-long rail stops can be snapped onto the saw's rails to prevent it from sliding all the way back. Unlike the rail lock on the DWS780, this will still allow the rails to fully extend.

The orange pieces shown in the photos are a prototype of a different product and will not be shipped with the Dust Collection Throat Plate!

NOT INTENDED FOR BEVEL CUTS! The throat plate and dust shroud are intended to be used with the blade at 90 degrees to the table. You can enjoy dust-free, quality cuts at any miter angle your saw was designed to make, but bevel cuts will destroy the throat plate and the vacuum port.

WORKS WITH THIN & FULL KERF BLADES! Designed with just the right amount of clearance to account with the flex that can happen when not pulling perfectly straight down and forward with the handle.

NOT GUARANTEED TO FIT ANY MODEL OTHER THAN DEWALT DWS779 & DWS780 SLIDING COMPOUND MITER SAWS!

This setup is intended to work with aftermarket dust collection systems that use a 1-5/8" outside diameter hose cuff (the piece that would be connected to a dust collector or vacuum hose). It can also be used with the factory dust collection tube, although we cannot guarantee it will make much a difference with the factory dust collection.

The throat plate sections, vacuum port, vacuum adapter and rail stops are 3D printed with PETG filament.

Works great, no dust under the mitre saw

I don’t like the fact that I had to do some minor modifications to my saw that were not talked about in the written or video instructions. That being said after installation was completed there is still a fair amount of dust flying out the back.

Works GREAT!!!

I can’t believe what a difference the dust collection for my miter saw makes. Dust debris are nearly nonexistent. Really love the set up. Thanks so much. (The only thing of note is that I had to put a single layer of tape around the adapter so it would fit with the Shop Nation aftermarket kit. This was mentioned in your video that they changed the diameter slightly of their plastic joint.)

Fit with modification

The front plate (the one without the pre loaded screws) does not fit all the way down. The reason it doesn't is because there is a hard plastic part on bottom of the saw that prevents the plate fron setting flush. I took a .25 inch upcut end mill in my cordless router and knocked it down and after that it fit flush. Im hoping the product is effective. Too soon to tell. Also. I have not been using 2.5" hose on my shop Nation aftermarket product. I use 1.25 or 1.5 hose so the adapter you sent with the product I purchased is almost useless.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback, Gregory! The issue that you ran into is an issue with certain older model saws, and I haven't been able to figure out exactly which models are affected by it yet. But you got the fix correct! It can also simply be cut out of the blade trough with a sharp utility knife or ground down with a rotory tool like a Dremel.

As for the vacuum adapter, I've found that anything less than 36mm/1-7/8' hose is a bit subpar for dust collection on a miter saw, especially while adding vacuum to the throat plate, so the adapter is designed accordingly, fitting 36mm Festool hose, 1-7/8' and 2-1/2' shop vacuum hose and 2-1/2' dust collection hose. That said, you should be able to use any common adapter to reduce down to a smaller diameter hose (as in a 1-7/8' to 1-1/4' reducer, for example).

All the best,
Jodee
